Motor Insurance Groups for Private Cars |

The purpose of motor insurance groups is primarily to assist insurers,
intermediaries, brokers and Lloyds syndicates calculate premiums. In addition
to this, insurance group information can often help those who are looking
to buy a vehicle and compare the insurance group rating of one car against
another car. Generally the higher the rating the more expensive it is
to insure the motor car. For example, insurance group 1 is low compared
to 20 which is high. Who is responsible for producing the Insurance Group Rating System? The Association of British Insurers (ABI) who represent most insurers and Lloyds syndicates operating in the United Kingdom have taken it upon themselves to produce and publish insurance groups for the benefit of their members and the public at large. It must be stressed however, that the information is advisory and not binding on any of the organisations members. Therefore, not all insurers, brokers, intemediaries or Lloyds syndicates choose to use the ABI’s insurance group rating system. Why are some vehicles not covered by the ABI’s rating system? In simple terms, most vehicles which do not deviate from a major manufacturer’s factory specification are covered by the system. Therefore, imported cars, kits and other specialist motors are unlikely to be given an insurance group. This does not mean however, that you cannot insure these types of vehicles as those insurers who are prepared to offer insurance will almost certainly have adopted their own methods of calculating premiums. For more information on motor insurance groups and how to find the rating for your particular vehicle consider visiting the ABI’s Insurance Group Ratings for Private Cars.
